WSET Level 3 explained

What is the WSET Level 3 Award in Wines?

The WSET Level 3 Award in Wines is where wine study stops being a list of names and starts being an argument. You are expected to explain why a wine tastes the way it does, from climate and soil through to the decisions made in the winery — and to justify a judgement about quality.

Explaining style, not naming it

Level 3 asks you to connect cause and effect. Why does a cool climate give higher acidity? Why does gravel suit Cabernet Sauvignon on the Left Bank? Reciting a region and its grape is not enough; you have to say what makes it work.

Viticulture and winemaking in detail

The syllabus covers the growing season, vineyard hazards and management, and the winemaking choices that shape a wine: fermentation temperature, cap management, malolactic conversion, lees ageing and the difference between flavour from oak and oxygen through oak.

The wine regions of the world

France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Austria and Hungary, the Americas, South Africa and Australasia, plus sparkling and fortified wines. You compare appellations and styles rather than memorising them one at a time.

What this app covers, and what it does not

Kurkacademie practises the theory through multiple-choice questions. The real Level 3 exam also has a short written answer section and a blind tasting of two wines, and this app does not simulate either. It does cover the Systematic Approach to Tasting as theory.

Why practise with Kurkacademie

9 modules covering viticulture, winemaking, the wine regions of the world, sparkling and fortified wines.

Mock exam in Level 3 rhythm: 50 multiple-choice questions at a 55% pass mark, timed to the share of the paper they represent.

Progress tracked per topic, so a weak region or process shows up before the exam does.

Spaced repetition brings the questions you got wrong back sooner.

Sample questions

Why do cool climates tend to produce wines with higher acidity?

Grapes ripen more slowly, so less of the natural acid is used up before harvest.

What effect does lees ageing have on a white wine?

It adds bready, biscuit-like flavours and a richer, creamier texture.

Which grape variety dominates the red wines of the northern Rhone?

Syrah.

When does this approach suit you?

Alongside a course

Use Kurkacademie as a practice layer next to classroom teaching or an official study pack. It does not replace WSET course material; it makes recalling that material active.

Instead of only re-reading

Re-reading a textbook feels productive but rarely tests recall. Multiple-choice questions force you to retrieve and apply what you know.

For the theory half

The app trains the knowledge the exam tests in writing: why a climate, soil, grape and winemaking decision add up to a style. It does not simulate the written paper or the tasting.

Frequently asked questions

Which part of the WSET Level 3 exam does this app practise?

Part 1 of the Unit 1 theory paper: the 50 multiple-choice questions. The full qualification also has Part 2, four short written answer questions worth 25 marks each, and a separate Unit 2 blind tasting of two still wines in 30 minutes. You need at least 55% in each part on its own. This app simulates neither Part 2 nor the tasting, but it does cover the underlying knowledge, including the Systematic Approach to Tasting as theory.

Is Kurkacademie affiliated with WSET?

No. Kurkacademie is an independent, private initiative and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to the Wine & Spirit Education Trust. All questions and explanations here are written from scratch.

Do I still need official course material?

Yes. This is a practice tool, not a substitute for a course or the official study pack. It works best once you have read the material and want to find out what has actually stuck.

How do the practice questions work?

Every question has four options and exactly one correct answer, with a short explanation of why the right answer is right and why the main distractor is not. Your score per topic updates as you go.

What is spaced repetition and why does it matter here?

Questions you answer incorrectly return sooner than ones you get right, so your practice time concentrates on the material you have not yet secured rather than on what you already know.
